Thursday, August 28: Required SLIS orientation events

8:45 a.m.   Registration and photos, 4217 Helen C. White Hall: Coffee, juice, bagels, fruit provided.
9:15 a.m.   Welcome
9:20 a.m.   Icebreaker activity
10:00 a.m.   Introduction to SLIS
  • Faculty and staff introductions
  • Curriculum presentation
11:45 a.m.   Lunch with affinity group: Please be prepared to pay for your own lunch. You need not stay with your group during the entire lunch session.
1:30 p.m.   Afternoon sessions begin
On-campus students return to the SLIS Commons and follow this schedule:
1:30 p.m.   Academic advising
  • General Q&A session
  • Meet with your assigned faculty advisor in groups
2:30 p.m.   Tour of SLIS lab library and computer lab
PALS students return to the SLIS computer lab, located in the SLIS lab library, 4191 Helen C. White Hall, and follow this schedule:
1:30 p.m.   Academic advising and introduction to Learn@UW
2:30 p.m.   Pick up UW ID at Union South and explore campus
All students follow this schedule:
3:45 p.m.   Introduction to student organizations
4:15 p.m.   Opportunities for student involvement in organizations
4:45 p.m.   Lasagne dinner sponsored by SLIS and the SLIS Alumni Association
5:00 - 9:00 Multicultural Graduate Network Reception, Memorial Union (optional, not a SLIS event)

Wednesday, August 27: Optional orientation events

SLIS computer workshops are available for students who would like to learn these specific programs. Workshops are taught in the SLIS computer lab, located in the SLIS lab library, 4191 Helen C. White Hall. Attendance is limited to 25 students per workshop. Workshops will also be offered on Saturday, September 6th, times to be determined. These workshops are optional.

2:00 p.m. RefWorks

New UW Graduate Student Orientation is sponsored by the Graduate School. The Graduate School is a separate entity from SLIS. This orientation contains general information about life as a UW grad student and will not include information about SLIS. This orientation is an optional activity for SLIS students.

12:30 - 2:00 pm Panel discussion with current graduate students
1:00 - 4:00 pm  Resource Fair
2:15 - 3:00 pm  Fellowship orientation (Fellowship recipients only)
4:00 - 6:00 pm  Graduate Student Collaborative Reception
