Specialization in Archives and Records Administration (ARA)

LIS 734 Modern Archives Administration. (Cross-listed with History). For students particularly interested in archives administration, library science, historical agencies administration, or teaching of history; basics in theory and practice of modern records administration. Lectures; lab work in the Wisconsin Historical Society's Division of Archives and Manuscripts.

LIS 754 Archives User Services and Outreach. Theories, principles and practices involved in making archival records accessible to the public. Particular emphasis is placed on (1) the role that archival description plays in mediating access to archival material and (2) on the public service and public programming components of archival work.

LIS 616 Records Management. Introduction to the theories, principles and practices involved in managing records (both paper and electronic) in both private and public sector organizations.

LIS 818 Accessioning and Appraisal. Looks at the theories, principles and practices behind the decision to both acquire records and designate records as worthy of long term retention in an archive.

LIS 976 Special Problems in Archives/Manuscript Administration.(Cross-listed with History). A research seminar that deals with contemporary problems in the collection and administration of the archival record and with related areas such as oral history, historical editing, and historical agency administration.

LIS 977 The Practice of Archives/Manuscripts Administration. Practical training (160 hours) in the collecting and accessioning, arrangement, description and servicing of archives and manuscript holdings in the Division of Archives and Manuscripts of the Wisconsin Historical Society.
