Course Requirements for the MA Program in Library and Information Studies

The curriculum is divided into three tiers. All courses are three credit courses.

Tier One: Required courses

All students will take the following three courses:

  1. 450 Information Agencies and Their Environment
  2. 451 Foundations of Reference
  3. 551 Organization of Information
Tier Two: Options, all strongly recommended

Students must choose at least three for a minimum of 9 credits

Tier Two: Standard MA program & Archives alternatives
635 Reference and Information Services
(Archives students can take 754 Archives User Services and Outreach)
639 Information Literacy Pedagogy
644 Digital Tools, Trends, and Debates
651 Cataloging
654 Management
655 Collection Management
(Archives students can take 818 Accessioning and Appraisal)
661 Information Ethics and Policy
710 Research Methods
(Archives students can take 976 Special Problems in Archives/Manuscripts Admin)
734 Archives Administration
Tier Three: Electives

All other courses for a maximum of 24 credits

Students admitted before Fall 2008 must take 450, 551, 561, and 571. They must also choose at least two courses from Tier Two, which may or may not be 651 or 654.
