Diversity and SLIS
SLIS shares the commitment of the library profession to improving the
diversity of the profession. We recognize that libraries cannot reach
their potential as community centers, culture keepers, and agents of
literacy and of change unless professional librarians reflect the
communities they serve.
We believe that all of us are better able to serve our communities if
we learn how to be active participants in culturally and ethnically
diverse communities, as well as welcoming of various sexual
orientations and gender identities.
We are determined to embody our commitment to diversity through both a
focus on recruitment and support of students of color and creation of a
learning community that values difference.
The University also embraces a goal to diversify its student body and
to facilitate all students’ learning how to live in a
welcoming, multi-ethnic, multicultural world.
We embrace these Strategic Objectives:
- Work with campus libraries and the Alumni Association
to support workplace diversity and to mentor students of color.
- Identify sources of grant support for diversity
recruitment and student scholarships.
- Infuse concerns around gender, ethnic, and cultural
diversity throughout the curriculum.
- Conduct research concerning diversity.
